Overview

Gravie is a startup that administers health benefits to small and mid-sized employers. To make these health benefits more accessible to members, Gravie built a mobile app for iOS and Android to be launched at the first of the year to support members with new plans beginning in January.

One of the challenges of this project was to make sure we were coordinating with the member site team frequently, as many new features were simultaneously developed for the website. We also coordinated closely with the Product Strategy team to ensure the mobile experience was delivering on business objectives.

App Prototype

Take a spin through the prototype to see the main features of Gravie's app.

Discovery

A variety of discovery and research methods were implemented to guide the design of the mobile app, including a member site audit, card sorting, content mapping, and user flows.

From these explorations, I gained a better understanding of what the user experience should be, which in turn informed the need for the user interface.

UI Library

After discovery, I created low-fidelity wireframes to understand what foundational UI elements would be include in the app. From there, I began building the elemental pieces of the UI library. Those elements, such as typography and color, were heavily influenced by the Gravie brand. To ensure I was creating a flexible and accessible design system, special attention was paid to how the basic elements could be expanded.

Once these atomic elements were designed, more complex molecules of the system could be constructed. During this process I consulted with engineering to explain design patterns in order to address any issues early. Having an established system made the end to end process of building the app far more efficient for everyone on the product and engineering teams.
